Reasons to prefer an EV over a gas car

Since I had to explain more than once why I think driving an EV is a good idea, I have created a list that may be helpful to those who is considering buying an EV or PHEV, or is just interested. I am starting with reasons that I expect most readers to agree regardless of their ideology and then ratcheting it up a bit. Here we go.

  1. Most EVs are fast and fun to drive.
  2. EVs are silent, you'll likely won't miss engine noise.
  3. Charging in your garage or at work rather than having to stop by a gas station saves time. EVs also require less frequent maintenance further saving your time.
  4. You and those around you will be healthier. EVs do not produce harmful to your health tailpipe exhaust. You inhale less environmental pollutants and your immune system can spend the energy used on cleaning up those pollutants from your body, on other issues.
  5. Driving an EV is good for national security. Every time you pay for gas, you make a small donation to all oil producing nations and entities, many of which is not where you’d choose to send your money. This is because oil is a global commodity. Oil demand in the US affects global oil prices and in turn the revenue of oil producers. Top 10 oil producers include Russia, Saudi Arabia, US, Iraq, China, Iran, Canada, UAE, Kuwait, Brazil (the complete list is here). It is also important to note that 25% of oil consumed in the US is imported. For comparison, only 1.3% of US electricity is net imported.
  6. Driving an EV is good for US financial health and in particular for reducing trade deficit, since as stated in the previous point much less electricity is imported comparing to oil.
  7. Driving an EV produces less greenhouse gases leading to global warming. Most of us will better enjoy our tax dollars spent on infrastructure, healthcare and education, rather than on dealing with floods and other extreme weather events.
  8. "Cradle to the grave" EVs are cleaner than gasoline car.
  9. Buying and driving an EV helps clean energy technologies and infrastructure reach economies of scale.
  10. Many customers have an option to get their electricity 100% clean - either by installing solar panels, participating in community solar or like myself at a price of couple of lattes, in addition to the regular electric bill, purchasing 100% clean energy from a local utility.
